Vote for the Solidarity Slate (Slate 2)!

It is time for bold new leadership in our Union. We need a stronger Union ready to face challenges head-on with innovative ideas and new power.

We have had a difficult few years. We are all teaching and working more with less support for our research, for our programs, and for our students. We deserve better. Our leadership team will listen to members and plan around our goals so that we can negotiate with power instead of making reactionary decisions based on fear.

Our first priority is to revitalize Union culture. Meetings must be accessible for all members, and discussion and questions encouraged so that every voice and idea is valued. We will restore the local negotiations committee to increase collaboration and transparency. Our Union will work with other bodies on campus such as the Faculty Senate to ensure concerted action for the betterment of all of us.

The current local negotiation strategy is not working for us. Our first act will be to conduct a full independent analysis of five years of University spending and provide a cogent explanation to members at an open meeting. With that information, and by listening to members’ needs, we will create a strong negotiation strategy to bring back the release time and support we need to have full careers at William Paterson.

Our University is not alone in facing austerity and corporatization. Union meetings must be a place where we discuss how these forces impact us and find solutions to combat them. We must build solidarity across campus, the state, and the nation. Any success we see against the corporatization of higher education is the direct result of the growing higher education labor movement. We need to be an active part of this historic moment.

We must make sure our Union addresses the needs of all members. Professional staff are struggling with increased workloads and pressure from KPIs and they need a stronger voice in our Union. We will make meetings accessible for staff and ensure that we are addressing issues of workplace flexibility, work-from-home policies, and understaffing. And as our University relies increasingly on contingent labor, we must do more to reach NTTPs and adjuncts and encourage Union involvement. We will increase adjunct membership and outreach to prepare for future contract negotiations where we can achieve actual pay parity.

Our team brings new skills and extensive experience in leadership, academic policy, activism, local negotiations, RTP development, performance review, university budgeting, political strategy, NJ state contract negotiations, NJ higher education strategy, University Senate, public relations, and non-profit management. Each of us has a deep respect for members, a commitment to democracy and transparency, and a demonstrated commitment to social justice and inclusion. We will work with tenacity for all of us.

You have a choice. We can continue with the current plans, always settling for less than we deserve. Or we can breathe new life into our Union and work together to create solutions that build our power and bring new success.  www.BuildOurPower.org

Know Your Rights in a Union Election

Fair elections are a critical part of a healthy democratic Union. The national AFT Constitution (Article IV Section 5) states that all AFT locals must follow the Office of Labor Management Standards for Electing Union Officials.

All members have the right to:

  1. Freedom of speech and assembly, including the right to:
    1. criticize union officials;
    2. express any viewpoint at union meetings (subject to reasonable rules of conduct);
    3. distribute campaign literature;
    4. hold separate meetings without interference from union officials (The Union Member’s Bill of Rights, Title I of the LMRDA)
  2. Receive uncensored information from all candidates so that they can make a fully informed choice:
    1. “A union must honor all reasonable requests by a candidate to distribute campaign literature at his expense to all members in good standing, whether the distribution is by mail or some other means. The union may not censor the contents of campaign literature it is requested to distribute. It must treat all candidates fairly.” [source]
    2. The New Jersey AFT Contract specifically allows for the use of university email for “internal union matters involving the governance or business of the UNION” (Article X Section C).

The following practices are illegal under LMRDA:

  • Electioneering: Using Membership Meetings to campaign to the entire membership or a subset of the membership.
  • Using the official means of Union communication (i.e. AFT email addresses) to distribute campaign material, when the other slate does not have equal access.
    • “A union must honor all reasonable requests to distribute campaign literature at a candidate’s expense.”
  • Use of non-AFT employees (e.g. CWA staff) to distribute campaign material.
  • LMRDA prohibits the use of union resources to promote (or oppose) the candidacy of any particular candidate, unless the resources are made available to all candidates on an equal basis.

The Elections Committee has legal obligations outlined by the U.S. Department Of Labor. Among these include:

  • To comply with all reasonable requests to distribute literature to all members and to treat all candidates equally.
  • Prevent electioneering.
  • Ensure the list of voters is current and accurate.

Statement on Comments at 11/15 Membership Meeting

During the AFT Membership Meeting on 11/15, Union leadership made the following statement about the Pre-Doctoral Fellows Program: “What are you going to do, bring in the minorities and fire the white people who have been committed to the university?”

We are appalled by the racist assumptions behind this statement. The Solidarity Caucus supports all efforts at William Paterson to diversify our faculty and to support our colleagues of color. We are expressly against divisive declarations that imply Union leadership is not fighting equally for everyone.

We will encourage our Union leadership to address this statement with members and to assure us that they will fight for each and every member.

Election Results: Members Have Spoken!

Thank you to everyone who voted for change in our Union! Although the results are not exactly what we would have hoped for, this campaign has been a success in many ways:

Our VPs for Grievances won! Congratulations to Keumjae Park and Joe Spagna! Having our caucus represented on the Union Executive Board gives us even more legitimacy and a voice in Union decision-making. We will support them as they work hard for all Union members!

The voting results show that a significant number of Union members want real change in our Union. Our candidates received over 46% of the overall vote. More than one-third of Union members voted to support our vision and goals. We are too large to be ignored!

This campaign has also meant that for the first time in many years our Union members have been able to have real conversations about the direction of our Union. We’ll make sure these conversations continue to take place.

Our fight for a more democratic, member-driven Union continues. Together, we will ensure that our Union is a place where all members have a voice and where fair elections occur regularly as the hallmark of democracy and member involvement. Our work continues!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed so much to this campaign. We can be proud of what we’ve accomplished. Join us to help in this work!

Voting is open! It’s time for change!

We deserve a Union that respects members and values action, democracy, transparency, inclusion, and justice.
